JEANNE EAGELS : The SmallgGay Review

 A socialist I know nearly redeemed her politics by giving me a much desired item on my Amazon Christmas wishlist. The Kim Novak Collection is a MUST. All the films are restored and gorgeous!

 The big hits included in the collection are PICNIC, BELL BOOK AND CANDLE and PAL JOEY. But the awesome surprise for me was JEANNE EAGELS  a 1950's precurser to the 1960's "Show Biz is Hell" genre made famous by VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Kim Novak at her most beautiful plays 1920's Broadway and film star Jeanne Eagels- a woman "cursed with talent"- who's amazing acting ability and lust for fame lead her headstrong into booze, bad marriages, drugs and God knows what else! We see Jeanne rise from carney cooch dancer in Jeff Chandler's side show, to student of famous acting coach Agnes Moorhead, to arch foe to self-destructive pathetic former Broadway star Virginia Grey to inhumanly beautiful (and ruthlessly anti-union!) mega-star!

 I'd never seen Jeff Chandler in anything other than the pulpy camp Joan Crawford classic FEMALE ON THE BEACH and I was thrilled to finally see what the fuss was about- Chandler is gorgeous here and you can see why Kim can't quite forget her old carnival flame!

Agnes Moorhead is wonderfully haughty and pretentious as the dram coach and Virginia Grey is haunting and pathetic.

Critics at the time did not like Novak in the lead but she is perfect here and her performance like the film itself has aged beautifully and comes across as modern and exciting. It's impossible for the viewer to take his or her eyes off her. I don't think I'd ever seen Novak more beautiful which is saying something!

What can I say? I'm a sucker for old-fashioned melodrama and stories about good girls who go to the dogs in the glittering and sometimes nightmarish world of show business! How great to live in a time where we have access to films like this that have gone forgotten for years. It will be interesting comparing JEANNE EAGELS to the similar "performer in peril" THE BLACK SWAN opening soon. Something tells me Kim Novak's stunning picture will last longer.

It's the Single Issues Stupid.

Reading AMERICA BY HEART by Sarah Palin, I was struck by a passage in the first chapter:

"I've noticed that more and more have made defending our founding principles a main part of their mission. Americans who believe in the sanctity of life and advocate for the unborn, for example, no longer simply call themselves 'pro-life'. Now they're 'pro-life and pro-Constitution'. Folks who care about the environment aren't 'pro-conservation' anymore. Now they're 'pro-conservation and pro-Constitution'. And those Americans clinging to their guns? They're not just 'pro-Second Ammendment'. They're 'pro' the whole darn thing."

I thought this was a fascinating observation. I've been coming at the Tea Party from a gay/Libertarian point of view. My Constitutional Conservative awakening comes from that perspective. GO Proud and company have been calling for the Tea Party to steer clear of "social issues" and stay focused on fiscal Conservatism as a mean of maintaining unity and numbers.

But Palin is showing us the view from the other side and they are experiencing the exact same thing.

It suddenly dawned on me after reading Palin's observation that this is NOT about giving up "social issues". The Tea Party was not a success because it gave up social issues- it was a success because it gave up single issues. Millions of Americans of all social view points are now focused on the big picture- returning this country to it's Constitutional Conservative Foundation.

THIS IS ONE FIERCE GAY AND HE DESERVES TO SHOUT IT OUT!!!

I am soooo over DADT. I'm sick of gays couching this as gays in the military. Gays have been able to serve the country legally since Clinton. This is about being able to be open gay activists in the military and I know these people- overturning DADT will just be the beginning. These people want to and will argue endlessly about everything imaginable.

I agree with Laura Ingraham- this MUST be openly debated and not rushed through a lame duck Congress. This will cause a massive uproar if it does and rightfully so.

Nor am I impressed with Scott Brown going along with this- indeed I'd be surprised if he didn't. Brown seems to be a rubber stamp for John Kerry. He's turned into the RINO poster boy- not his first time as a pin-up either. He's the Republican Christine Gillibrand.

Bradley Manning's case is so symptomatic of the DADT debate. The guy got all pissy and hissy and downloaded top secret docs because he was angry at the military denying him HIS rights. NOTHING else mattered- indeed nothing else matters to the Che gays but their ever shifting whims and demands for love and attention.

The homocons are being pretty quiet about this but I think this is symptomatic of the single issue self-serving politic that Americans are sick of and we have bigger problems now facing us.

Barry Goldwater should be revered by gay people and goes ignored. Here's what the brilliant Senator Goldwater had to say about gays in the military thirty years ago:

"Everyone knows that gays have served honorably in the military since at least the time of Julius Caesar."

"You don't have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight."

Barry Goldwater was one of the most conservative candidates to run for President in the history of the United States and a hero of The John Birch Society. WHY do gays chose to remain blind to the freedom ONLY true conservatism can offer them?

The John Birch Society Was Fabulous

I've been looking at the history of the notorious John Birch Society online and on video. Fascinating stuff. The group was a forerunner of the Tea Party in many ways with more of an emphasis on communism than on creeping socialism. Many of us grew up with the image that the JBS were thoroughly crazy thanks to constant liberal media mockery. It now seems the group has been misrepresented for decades. They were against school integration for example which led them to be labeled "racists" for years, but they objected on Constitutional grounds- because it was done by government order and by force. They thought it should be done voluntarily and within the social sphere- a detail that is never mentioned. The group itself was integrated and had no bias against race or religion- years before similar liberal groups were integrated.

Indeed John Birch Society hero Barry Goldwater was an outspoken advocate of gay rights years before most Democrats would say a word in our defense and was openly supporting gays in the military in the late 70's and early 80's!

Looking back at The John Birch Society, it's clear they were taken down not by liberal media but by the RINOs of the 1960's. A cautionary tale the Tea Party should take note of.

Toward a Gay Tea Party Identity

What an exciting time to be a homocon! Gone are the days of uptight sweater queens tut-tutting over leather men in gay narcissism parades. Indeed today's homocon seems to be especially hard to pin down! Where are we going? What exactly is the new homocon identity?

Homocons tend to be independent conservatives and with good reason. Both extremes- left and right want to either enslave or cure us. Today's homocon has more in common with the Tea Party and it's "Don't Tread on Me" attitude! We're not looking to government for help but we sure as hell don't want government controling our lives or in our bedrooms either.

I still see a lot of political correctness in the homocons but that will change too. Many are still obsessed with the government helping them achieve "freedom" when we already have it. Many still rationalize their conservatism through a lens of gender identity, feminism and political correctness. But this is changing as the ACT UP generation comes of age and reclaims traditional conservatism with it's still radical ideal of self empowerment and God given equality by virtue of our being born in the greatest nation the world has ever known.

In fact this is in large part why there may never be a "Gay Tea Party Identity" if we're lucky, but rather Americans who happen to be gay living their lives on their terms and not letting others set the debate, decide on what our issues are or define our lives.

Considering that this week's loser was of equal or lesser ability to Bristol and the fact that we in "Operation Bristol" are following the rules fair and square- (here's a hint on how the conspiracy works- we tweet the night of voting "Vote Bristol!")- and are honestly voting for our favorite dancer who we adore- I can only come to the conclusion that this is Palin Derangement Syndrome in all it's glory yet again!

A Message to Gay Youth Everywhere

I am so disgusted with the gay left foisting victimhood on a new generation to distract us all from their complicity with the upholding of DADT and DOMA.

Gay kids need empowerment not victimhood. If gay teens feel vulnerable, I would rather community centers teach self-defense classes. Older gays need to arm themselves if they feel at risk not just take their knocks until they can emotionally blackmail the majority into demanding a police state.

Gun training is needed in the gay and lesbian scene! And if you have issues with guns, there are stun guns, tasers- a world of new high tech defensive weapons- all legal!

When I was a teen, gays were despised by everyone- especially the editorial staff of the New York Times who would only refer to us as "homosexuals". We had something bigger to worry about in those days than someone saying something mean that would damage our fragile self esteem. We had AIDS breaking out and the hysteria that went with it and yet most of my generation luckily survived and those that didn't went down fighting.

Here's something the gay left won't tell gay teens but I will: "WE ALL HAVE OUR CROSS TO BEAR". Get out of yourself and don't let the gay left convince you that there is something wrong or different about you. You are not special- and that means you are normal and just as good as the rest of the buttheads out there. So get out there and kick serious ass and if you feel bad for others- do something real like charity work and leave the leftism to the rich bastards.
